Gaia - Sweater Project

Luneva Maria is a flower artist who uses photography and natural elements to create beautiful imagery (@supinatra). The collection is inspired by plants, fruits and flowers observing the contrast between their structural lines and soft feminine curves. The colors were referenced from the natural dye process. The techniques were inspired by the forms within nature that occur all around us.

Menswear - The North Face Project

Roid is a London based graphic artist who primarily focuses on typography. His architectural illustration and unique approach inspired this mens wear collection. Roid’s innovative approach to the blocking of forms, the pushing and pulling of design elements paired with his sophisticated eye for color were the building blocks for this project. I used his technique of blocking forms to create silhouettes. I used his muted tones along with his key pop colors.

Reinvent the Classics - Sweater Project

During my time freelancing at Tommy Hilfiger I was asked to submit a project based on the concept ‘Reinvent the Classics’. This project included two small sweater capsules for the Spring 2020 Season. I was asked to consider three to four new ideas - what the new millennial customer is buying (basic pull over, cardigan, etc) and what are the new silhouettes. Secondly I was asked to show four to five new Sportswear Fashion ideas that encompass the Spring 2020 concept.

Future History - Senior Collection

My Fall 2014 womenswear collection includes hand-knitted pieces, hand-made yarns, and hand-dyed velvet, and was inspired by the idea of all cultures combining as one.

The main details of my knits were taken from the design of Fabergé eggs, while the oversized silhouettes showcased in my collection were inspired by the reinterpretation of traditional Inuit outerwear. I was able to showcase my collection as a double major in New York fashion week where I represented the Academy of Art University.

The People of Bolivia

The People of Bolivia was a level 3 knitwear project, the concept was made just in sample and illustration form. I took Bolivia’s bold color, textile, and handwork concepts and reinterpreted them into knits. I wanted to use machine and hand knitted techniques to further push this concept. The combination of old and new really helped to elevate the sample concepts. Jacquards in combination with felting, beading, embroidery, cables and bold color choices made this a fun visual project.

Not so punk

Not so punk is a level 4-design project where I used knitwear and woven fabrics in order to express this vision. I wanted to use unconventional punk materials such as mesh and latex in combination with men’s wear fabrics.  I decided to design very skinny suits and full skirts in order to play with extreme proportions. The knit silhouettes are oversized to continue with this concept. I used a limited color palette in this project to focus on the texture of fabric rather then the color.

Inuit Language

Inuit Language is a level 3 project containing knitwear and woven women’s wear. This project set the premise for my senior collection. I fell in love with the idea of trying to create fur through knits and using embellishments to add richness. I used rabbit fur and brushed my knits to create a hair like effect. As one will notice in the sketches I tried to do layering by cutting the body in three sections. When one does research on the clothing you can find this as a common theme.

Interior/Exterior

Interior/Exterior is a level 4 design project. The inspiration came from all aspects the home interior. I looked to ornate patterns on decorative relief as well as upholstery fabric. I wanted to convey a modern take on classic home design. I drew influence from the kimono silhouette but as opposed to using traditional silk I opted for quilting to provide an alternative shape. The embossed leather with pastels drew from vintage tea sets. To have a more modern spin I used geometric embroidery to juxtapose the florals and the knits added additional texture. The overall color palette is feminine which helped soften the boldness of the shapes.

Western Glam

For western glam I wanted to focus on my hand illustrations. I decided to do two novelty sweaters as well as two knit dresses creating a mini project in order to showcase a fun quirky take on sweaters.

Unfolding the Innevitable

Unfolding The Inevitable was a level 3 project that was inspired by my brief relocation to L.A. to attend my Rodarte internship. I noticed a emerging trend towards sportswear and saw how limited the silhouettes were. I added drawstring details to create a new shaped arm that also plays with proportions. The idea was to see the future of what sportswear could be. I used a neon color palette and incorporated luxurious hand techniques. The beading on mesh was pixilated motif along with hand dipped marbled fabrics. I played with transparencies by creating eyelets reminiscent of digital halftone. The purple knit swatch was supposed to emulate circuitry. The white knit with neon studs brings a futuristic touch almost evoking the feeling of the heavens and celestial bodies.
